Combining Surface and Previous HitDownholeNext Hit Hydrocarbon Mapping for Defining the Utica Shale

The Utica shale play is a difficult area in which to explore due to the numerous hydrocarbon sources and multiple stacked zones. These multiple stacked pays result in mixed drilling success with both economic and noneconomic drilling results. In addition there are numerous geohazards with the excessive fracturing and faulting in the area.

This case history will demonstrate how surface hydrocarbon mapping was used to:

  • coincide mapped anomalies with geohazards
  • show how hydrocarbon anomalies aligned with surface lineaments indicating possible hydrocarbon filled fractures
  • map gas charge across a shale pay
  • differentiate between liquid and gas portions of the play
  • differentiate between economic and noneconomic gas areas
  • Additionally, the Previous HitdownholeTop geochemical logging will demonstrate how the surface expression of signals can be correlated with surface expressions in proving an understanding of:

  • which zone the noneconomic gas may have been coming from,
  • which zone the economic gas may have been coming from, and
  • why were there surface expressions of heavier hydrocarbons
