BP is the operator for the Itaipu Field (40% working interest), in block BM-C-32 in the Pre-Salt deepwater play in the Espirito Santo area of the Campos Basin in Brasil. Devon Energy drilled and logged the discovery well at Itaipu (1-DEV-15 ESS or Itaipu-1) in November 2009. BP purchased Devon’s interests in Brasil in 2010, and obtained final approval for the deal from the ANP in May 2011. BP is now actively engaged in appraising the Itaipu field for further understanding of both in-place and recoverable volumes through a campaign of appraisal well drilling, and flow testing. The first flow test at the Itaipu-1 well is planned for 1Q 2013.

The focus of this presentation is to discuss the Itaipu#1A DST objectives, design and results, along with an operations summary and lessons learnt.

Key objectives for the DST are to: (i) to establish initial reservoir pressure, and test for potential depletion from Pre-Salt wells that have been producing (EWT’s) for some four years, (ii) establish pre-stimulation and post-stimulation well deliverability, (iii) establish reservoir parameters and detect boundaries from transient pressure data (iv) collect quality fluid samples, and (v) abandon the well with three wireless gauges for long term pressure monitoring

The results of the DST will shed light not only on deliverability and well performance at the Itaipu-1 well, but also add to the overall Campos Pre-Salt understanding – with respect to dynamic behavior and reservoir proprties, effectiveness of stimulation, and potential stimulation designs for a producer, as well as providing a technical basis for establishing pressure connectivity of the Itaipu and Whales Park fields.
