Shale gas exploration in the Colombian is becoming and important hydrocarbon industry target. Although the understanding of the shale system is one of the first steps for future development of such and unconventional resources. Future production activities include the hydraulic fracturing that is commonly associated to the injection of proppant which is commonly a very clean, round and extremely well sorted quartz sand. This sands are commonly import at relatively high costs and may increase the costs of large scale shale gas extraction.

Our current project involves the evaluation of Colombian sands useful for the hydraulic fracturing. Preliminary review of potential quartzose sandy units may suggest that both the Paleogene from the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia or more recent eolic sands exposed in the Llanos region along some of the major rivers.

We will analyzed the sedimentological and physical characteristics of this units in order to evaluate its real potential and reserves.
