Mudrocks, like all depositional systems, display intrabasinal variations in facies and rock attributes that are the result of depositional and diagenetic processes and are the major causes of reservoir heterogeneity. Integrated, multidisciplinary studies of major mudrock systems in the subsurface and in outcrop demonstrate both long-term (e.g., second-order)-order and shorter-term, process-response controls on facies and attribute architecture.
