A wide variety of data sources (publicly accessible, available for license, and newly acquired) and measurements (seismic, electro-magnetic, gravity, magnetic, radiometric, hyperspectral, petrophysical, etc.) are being utilized to develop 3-D subsurface Earth models. The authors will present an overview of their methodology for integrating and simultaneously interpreting as many of these sources and measurements as practical in order to generate more accurate, higly constrained subsurface models.

The technique can be broadly classified as simultaneous joint inversion (SJI), as it utilizes a geostatistical approach to data integration, including weighting factors that are assigned to each individual measurement used in the interpretation. End products resulting from the SJI include detailed maps of basin-scale structural and stratigraphic features as well as 3-D distributions of rock properties, fluid saturations, and fracture patterns in the reservoir interval(s) of interest.

In addition to presenting an overview of their methodology, the authors will also describe the application of the technique in a variety of exploration settings, with case studies chosen from among the following: a basin-scale lead identification study; gas saturation mapping in a submarine fan complex; fracture fairway detection in an unconventional gas reservoir; and shallow gas geo-hazard identification.
