An integrated conventional characterization program in the Woodford Shale, Arkoma Basin has yielded insight at both the regional and reservoir scale. The project was initiated in 2009 to understand prospectivity outside and inside the acquired Chesapeake acreage. The Resource Appraisal team worked closely with the Reservoir Management and New Well Delivery teams to characterize the regional play fairway (structure, stratigraphy, petroleum systems, production) and develop a sequence stratigraphic reservoir framework. The outcomes of the project are updated play boundaries, insight into controls on high-TOC rich deposition, and a methodology to improve the mapping of reservoir quality. The conventional approach to understanding this unconventional shale gas reservoir has helped improve our understanding of the play fairway and will help in its development.
