Polymer gel technology has improved vastly in recent years. Improved chemistry and lessons learned on the candidate selection process, preparation of the well for polymer injection, and treatment procedures have all lead to much higher success rates, and greater total incremental oil recoveries from polymer applications. In addition, recent applications in "new "reservoirs not normally associated with polymer technology have yielded successful results. There has also been a recent trend using polymer treatments as a completion method on newly drilled wells, sometimes AFE'd as a part of the initial drilling/completion expense. The availability of a successful polymer program has emboldened operators to drill in mature fields where high water cuts can be expected upon completion. Vastly improved oil rates and decreased water rates have been demonstrated when polymers are applied as a completion practice, allowing a much earlier payout of the drilling cost.
