In the past 10 years hydrocarbon exploration histories in Indonesia, there are several significant hydrocarbon discovery. Generally, the play concept has been moved to the deeper target and older age. There are several new play concepts that found in Eastern Indonesia area, which are thin skinned thrust system in the turbidite system at Kalimantan Deepwater, Miocene reef play in the Sulawesi Area, Jurassic Sand in Papua and East Timor gap. In East Java basin there are two explorations targets that have been pursued for the last 10 years, which are Oligo-Miocene Reef and Volcanoclastic Pliocene sediments. Meanwhile in the Sumatra area the target has been changed in to the deeper target which is Oligo-Miocene Syn-rift sediment.

The successful discovery has been provoke others company to learn from that and push the explorations activities in the last five years by finding new concept in their block or acquired new block in the nearby area of new discovery. (Mahakam deep water block discovery has been provoked the others discoveries in the surrounding area including in Tarakan deep water area).

The new play exploration strategy by defining the new play concept by learning from last discovery has been a role model in the exploration activities lately. Therefore understanding the play concept in the new discovery will instantly upgrade the opportunity to find hydrocarbon.
