Field geology and laboratory analysis, were carried out in the last century. Attempts were made to correlate with west and east Africa. No paleotologic evidence was then known to link Libyan basins, with West African basins. The NW-SE alignment of the inland igneous rocks makes the structural correlation, with western Sudan and east Africa Rift system acceptable. Hydrocarbons were known since early last century, but commercial discoveries in Algeria 1956, Libya 1958 Discovered hydrocarbons in sandstone, carbonate and reworked granite reservoirs in Paleozoic to Tertiary , spread to giant (Sarir, Amal,…etc) Fields . Libyan oil export began in 1961 to become the 4th largest exporter (3.3mmb\d) by 1970, from inland fields 100-500km south of the Medit... Libyan hydrocarbons were initially produced from the Sirte basin. It is consisted of three intensely faulted blocks ,fanning southward from the Mediterranean , located centrally between and in line with the north European and east African Rift systems and does not conform to other Libyan basins. The production peak followed by a decline to >1mmb\d>. New fields from Paleozoic inland (Murzok, Ghadamis) basins and offshore raised daily production towards 2mmb\d. Recent field work, laboratory analysis, geophysical data, improved petroleum geology, correlating Sirte basin with offshore and east African Rift systems ; opened new exploration frontiers to discover more giants.
