Wave 3: Broad Technolocy Trends and Their Effect on the Next Generation of Collaborative Visualization Environments

Mayer, Theo1 (1) Panoram Technologies, Sun Valley, CA

There are key technology trends in data management, displays, broadcast, consumer electronics, even military operations that implicate important strategic and competitive considerations for energy companies who have adopted visualization as an element of their operations.

TREND 1: The evolution of electronic displays from a 1:1 relationship between source and display, to embedded and windowed media in high-resolution environments. This may indicate the end of blended projection technologies for the industry and lead to new formats and approaches.

TREND 2: High Definition Television has been an evolving direction for over 25 years and has just crossed a crucial tipping point. This means the melding of entertainment system, computer monitors and information displays. Additionally, with the commoditization of such systems, the cost trends of displays may well be affected the way gaming has changed the cost structure of computer graphics.

TREND 3: Many data technologies and especially real-time data systems are coming on-line at a wildly accelerating rate. Most are not standardized, inter or intra compatible. This leads to a desperate need for visualization technologies that create Common Operating Pictures (COPs) that tie all the sources together is some way. This is one of the greatest challenges in the military world and is becoming a key issue for any organization trying to manage the nova scale real-time information explosion.

The presentation will expose each trend separately and then tie them together in order to explore the implications and strategic considerations for visualization users.
