Current Technology for Production of Shale Oil

Boak, Jeremy1 (1) Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO

A variety of technological approaches are currently being used or developed to realize the potential of oil shale as a source of petroleum hydrocarbons. Processes currently in use are employed for deposits that are mined and retorted at the surface to convert the immature kerogen to liquids and gas. Processes currently being developed (primarily in the United States) will be used to heat the kerogen in-situ and produce the liquids and gases by traditional methods. This paper describes five surface processes; three are currently producing energy resources, in some cases through direct combustion for power generation. It also describes three in-situ processes currently in the development stage. The paper describes an additional technology for heating of the oil shale using fuel cells.
