In the La Popa basin of northeastern Mexico, the middle Maastrichtian represents a time of transition between subsidence due mainly to passive salt withdrawal to a combination of subsidence and shortening related to the Hidalgoan (Laramide) orogeny and the subduction of the Farallon oceanic plate. This project will focus on the sedimentology, stratigraphy and petrology middle Maastrichtian strata in the La Popa and neighboring Parras basins to determine differences and similarities in the sedimentary sources and timing of orogenic events that were suppling detritus to these basins.
