An Integrated Description, Modeling and Management of a Low Permeability Reservoir, Puesto Peter Field, Austral Basin, Argentina

Puesto Peter oil field is located in the Austral Basin of southern Argentina. This field produces from a high permeability marine reservoir within the Magallanes formation and is in a mature stage of production.

In order to enhance field exploitation, the overlying low permeability sandstone (M2) has now become the focus of an integrated study. This study includes the use of seismic attributes, a petrophysical model as well as a high-resolution sequence stratigraphy and structural model.

M2 is a bioturbated marine sandstone placed into a 4th order tectonostratigrapic sequence where the presence of reservoir is controlled by the combination of accommodation space and erosion at the top.

Very high water saturation, low permeability and good porosity are the main characteristics that have an important role in the control not only the hydrocarbon placement but also the production potential.

Structural compartmentalization, permeable barriers and connection with another reservoirs were responsible for the trap mechanism and migration.

Seismic attributes has been used to statistically delineate facies, gas and oil distribution as well as used in the definition of structural dip.

All these information integrated into a geocelular framework guide us to a better understanding of these oil and gas system and gave us the possibility of delineation and development the field with less risk and more efficiency.

To date, four horizontal wells have been successfully drilled and are in oil production from strategic locations, testing the model and offering new data to feed back the model.
