ABSTRACT: Visualization Based volume Interpretation Reveals More Geological Information

Volume interpretation (VI) is different from conventional interpretation. It works on seismic volumes within an integrated environment instead of on vertical seismic sections and time slices. Volume interpretation requires interpreters to change the way they work, moving away from working with 2D views to interpreting all the data in 3D.
Two basic types of visualization, surface and volume visualization will be presented in the Poster. Interpreters are familiar with surface visualization, which results from mapping individual horizons and faults, and then reinterpreting them in a 3D space as a 3D model.
To illustrate the benefits of volume interpretation, workflows will be presented, including volume reconnaissance (channel, fan, delta), framework interpretation (subtle faults, complex fault system) and seismic attribute analysis. New seismic attributes are used in the examples, including, Spectral Decomposition, Dissimilarity prediction, and seismic attribute analysis.
