Using Web-Based Continuing Education Modules to Develop a Multidisciplinary Learning Environment

At the initial request of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, the American Geological Institute has been working with the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology to develop a series of Web-Based Continuing Education modules providing a multidisciplinary approach to Reservoir Characterization. The modules are designed for crossdisciplinary learning to assist members of work teams to better understand their colleague’s specialties in geology, geophysics, and engineering. The system is designed as a set of discrete web-based modules that focus on a single skill or concept, such as outcrop analogs or seismic parameters. The modules work off a set of similar data, and in the case of the initial development, that of a fluvial deltaic environment. The modules are designed to be uniquely interactive and take advantage of current web technology. Representing more than a book on the web with animations, the modules allow users to interact with the data to test and better understand the concepts being conveyed. Additionally, each module has a knowledge base of materials to allow for just-in-time delivery of appropriate information to the user as they need it, and additionally an “Ask- The-Expert” function monitors the user’s position and success through the module. If a user deviates substantially from the appropriate track through the module, the “Expert” guides them to the information to assist in their better understanding the concept, and back on track. The modules are designed to be used either independently or joined together as a formal course. The American Geological Institute looks to enlist the geoscience societies, particularly AAPG and SEG, to market and distribute access to the modules to the geoscience community.
