The Qiongdongnan basin lies to the southeast of Hainan Island in China. Some sedimentary and petroleum geological researches on this basin have been made priorly, which are somehow primitive due to a lack of exploration data and other limitations.

In order to study this basin more efficiently, this project has applied high-resolution sequence stratigraphic principles and methods to the research on the basin filling and attempted to expound the filly evolution of this basin. At the same time, we have made full use of some elementary data, including 3-D seismic profile, core, logging, drilling well, and geochemistry. Emphasizing on 3-D seismic area in the west of Qiongdongnan basin. The project has identified heterogeneity in different system tracts of the major reservoirs of which 3-D seismic distribution and physical characteristics have been distinguished and analyzed properly in the same sequence. In the aspects of seals, regional seal, local seal and overpressure seal of different spatial scale have been identified clearly. Based on the above, we have established the third-and fourth-order sequence stratigraphic framework and found regional reservoir and seal successfully in this basin. Furthermore, the project has provided more precise access to the study and evaluation of hydrocarbon pool forming capacity of Qiongdongnan basin. Finally, the favorable zones of oil and gas in this basin are predicted rationally.
