ABSTRACT: Geology and development of the largest and unique oil and oil-gas fields of Russia

The largest and unique oil and oil-gas fields of Russia are located within of 5 hydrocarbon basins. 49 of 65 such fields are located in West Siberia, 10 -in the Volga-Ural, 4-Timano-Pechora, 1-North Caucasus and 1-in Eastern Siberia regions. Just these fields contributed the main share to the Russian producing oil. Despite substantial depletion of oil reserves at the most productive fields, Russia continues to possess vast oil resources and significant petroleum potential .The main regions that contribute to the replenishment of Russian's petroleum resources include West Siberia, East Siberia (Sokha Republic), and theTiman-Pechora petroleum-producing province. There are the largest and most prospective, in terms of reserves and petroleum potential offshore areas of the Arctic and the Far Eastern shelves, is wells and the Russian portion of the Precaspian basin. Petroleum-bearing rocks of Russia include a succession of predominantly sedimentary Vendian-Neogene rocks. According to many Russian experts, even older rocks (including upper basement) may have petroleum potential. However, the most of discovered fields produce from Paleozoic and Mesozoic (Devonian, Carboniferous, Permian, Jurassic and Cretaceous) deposits. Russian researchers currently recognize 12 petroleum basins within the territory of Russia. The most important ones include West Siberia, Volgo-Urals, and Timan-Pechora. In fact, 63 out of 65 largest oil fields were discovered within these three provinces. Forty-nine giant oil fields have been discovered within the West Siberian region. The group of giant fields in Tyumen region includes 9 unique fields: Samotlor, Krasnoleninsk, Mamontovo, Fedorovo, Priob, Lyantorsk, Vat-Yegan, Tevlinsk-Russkinsk, and Russkoye
