Barrier-Free Learning for Well Construction

TRANTHAM, JAMES, ARCO Alaska Inc., Anchorage, AK

This paper documents how a drilling department and various information technology groups are working together to create a real-time, barrier free, learning environment.

In this environment, engineers and geologists discover that small jewels of knowledge are easily discovered and shared and allows them to design new work processes and standards. Examples given are centered on communal data, best practices, and the knowledge management approach called; the personalization strategy.

New technologies enable automatic drilling and geologic data collection, publishing, and collaboration within the company. Outside contractors are included via access through a secure extra-net web site. These new tools alone can not turn a group into a learning organization. Such an environment is accomplished by clear expectations of management, barrier-free organizational structures and building relationships with others. The Drilling Manager sets expectations to share information, solve problems together, develop best practices and learn from each other. Organizational structures are simplified to allow engineers to work closely with geologists, service companies, and the rig team. The drilling team involves the information technology group while designing its learning system.
