Abstract: The occurrence of Huckleberry Ridge ash in the South Timbalier region, Gulf of Mexico, and its potential for lithostratigraphic correlation

Wireline logs were used to identify stratigraphic intervals containing volcanic ash in the southern portion of South Timbalier in the Gulf of Mexico. Over fifty potential ash-bearing zones in blocks 139-314 were identified. Ash-bearing intervals from twelve wells throughout the area have been confirmed by extracting glass shards using high-density liquids. The confirmed intervals range from 60-180 feet thick and occur between 5400 and 9000 feet subsea. Two ash beds have been identified and their ages estimated using paleo-markers. Wells have penetrated an ash interval correlative to the Yellowstone Huckleberry Ridge Ash, marked by Hyalina B and Lenticulina 1. Two of the wells also penetrated an older, Pliocene ash marked by Valvulina H.

Because of their low density, these ash-bearing horizons give a seismic response and can be mapped. By confirming the presence of ash-bearing deposits and correlating them geophysically, the regional extent of the ash deposits can be established.
