Abstract: Becoming an independent

Recent rapid changes in the oil and gas industry are causing many geoscientists to reconsider their career paths. For many, becoming an independent may be a viable alternative to corporate employment. Once the commitment has been made to become an independent, early decisions and detailed preparation may determine ultimate success. Factors such as preparing a solid game plan, determining a market, discovering a competitive niche, learning to network, cultivating financial sources, learning to negotiate, and making downturns work to one's advantage are all important elements. Successful independents develop strategies that may be unconventional, but provide them with monetary and psychic rewards. Several examples of independent strategies are outlined.
