Abstract: Hydrocarbons and New Energy Sources - The Danish Model

Denmark is self-sufficient in energy and has for some years been a net exporter of oil and gas. This comfortable situation is mainly due to Denmark's present oil/gas production, which will not last forever.

Denmark intends to have a competitive, alternative energy strategy in place once its oil and gas wells have dried out. In 1996, the government adopted its Action Plan for sustainable development of energy in Denmark in an international context, called Energy 21. Protecting the environment is one of the focal points of the plan which aims at reducing CO2-emissions substantially by increasing the use of renewable energy and natural gas and by promoting energy conservation and efficiency.

In his speech Svend Auken, Danish Minister for Environment and Energy, will focus on how Denmark will implement the ambitious plan.
