Abstract: Paleogene Petroleum System of North Region of East Sag in Liaohe Basin, Northeastern China

The Paleogene petroleum system [E2+3(!)] of north region of east sag in Liaohe Basin is a known petroleum system. As a main source rock, the thick-bedded dark mudstone of 3rd Member in Shahejie Formation has been charging the system since the Late Shahejie Period. The generated hydrocarbon has been proved to be of nonmarine characteristics by a lot of biomarker analysis. Two stages of petroleum expulsion are noted based on an understanding of the oil maturity. The low-mature hydrocarbon generated in early stage is mostly accumulated in the western horst area of the region under the control of basic structural framework. A large amount of heavy oil has formed due to the long-term degradation in this area. The principal mature petroleum was generated in Late Oligocene, and the expulsion and accumulation followed. This period is taken as key moment of E2+3(!) petroleum system. Because of the influence of multiple fault movements, the hydrocarbon migration and accumulation display various complexities of multi-layered oil-bearing series, little faulted blocks and so on, therefore formed different types of oil and gas reservoir. According to the resource evaluation and reserve estimation, the generation-accumulation effectiveness (GAE) of E2+3(!) petroleum system is 9%; that means medium effective. A more detailed studies of structural and stratigraphic framework, oil-source correlation, the elements and processes description are also discussed in the paper.
