Abstract: Subsalt Exploration: Leveraging Solutions To Create Value Worldwide

Amoco's Gulf of Mexico Subsalt group developed a full-cycle process of problem identification, action plan, solutions, and information sharing, culminating in a SWAT Team that actively leverages learnings throughout other business groups.

Amoco identified the need for reducing the inherent risk of the subsalt play concept. We used a detailed competitor analysis to identify the technical risk factors critical to achieving quality subsalt prospects. An integrated task force was established to focus on six critical technical factors. Using problem-solving techniques, we developed a process flowchart to guide work processes and identify technical and skill gaps.

Solutions included the use of superior velocity model building tools, extensive seismic modeling, the understanding of mode converted energy and how all these factors contributed to improved subsalt imaging. These technical solutions integrated with proprietary geologic concepts led to the development of a comprehensive salt system model. This model affords a methodology to access risk and reduce uncertainty for salt terrain prospects.

The Subsalt group uses the learned techniques and processes to discern prospect types that are most amenable to present day solutions. Recognizing the opportunity to leverage these learnings throughout the organization, we proactively offered assistance to other high value basins that shared common critical risks such as salt cored structures, or depth imaging uncertainties. To further promote our expertise sharing, we established a SWAT team. Building on joint learnings, this team serves as a rapid deployment tool to leverage salt and depth imaging expertise, thereby maximizing impact throughout the organization.
