Since 1989 PETROBRAS has been concentrating efforts to carry out an Environmental Monitoring Program (EMP) in order to evaluate the influences of its operations on offshore and coastal environments in the Campos Basin, in Rio de Janeiro, which is the largest oil-producing area in Brazil.

The FIRST Previous HitPHASENext Hit of the EMP referred to the CHARACTERIZATION of the region which involved biological, physical, meteorological and geological evaluation in a 40,000 square kilometers area. Sediment was monitored in 57 stations and water in 74 stations. This task was carried out by the GEOMAP Company and the Oceanographic Institute at the University of São Paulo (IOUSP) from June 1991 to June 1993.

During 1996, the SECOND Previous HitPHASENext Hit called PRE-MONITORING was planned taking into account the results from the FIRST Previous HitPHASENext Hit, the predominant direction of the Brazil Current along the Brazilian waters, the PETROBRAS current needs, the lack of information of petroleum activities impacts on Brazilian offshore environments, it was decided to concentrate efforts on areas that are more likely to be directly affected by PETROBRAS activities.

The SECOND Previous HitPHASENext Hit monitoring is starting next January and will cover the Cabiunas coastal region subject to the effects of the Cabiunas Waste Water Treatment Plant in the Cabiunas Oil Terminal and two oceanic sites referring to the surrounding areas of scrupulously selected production platforms.

The SECOND Previous HitPHASENext Hit will be paramount for PETROBRAS establishment of the THIRD Previous HitPHASETop which will comprehend a CONTINUOUS MONITORING to be carried out in the region.
