Abstract: BP and the Environment in Latin America

Bourne, Greg - The British Petroleum Company

For the industry, Latin America has become a "hot spot". On the demand side, the region is moving towards a growth rate in the order of 5% per annum. This will accelerate energy consumption. Forecasts point to a 3% yearly growth in domestic demand for oil. On the supply side, the opening of the industry to international capital is already a driving force behind the region's strong production prospects.

Latin America is much more. It is unique, in terms of its capacity to harbor bio-diversity and fragile habitats - a home for many indigenous cultures and diverse communities.

BP believes that it is wise and responsible to develop the region's energy potential in a sustainable way, fully cognizant of the environmental and cultural heritage. Our position is not just a matter of values and principles; it is also both rational and self-interested. It is a business issue for BP.

We are part of society and must fulfill its expectations. Without its support, no commercial purpose is sustainable. Operating in a sustainable manner in Latin America is crucial and helps capture new global opportunities and continue our activities through time.

This paper explains our position and our recent experience in the region, including:

- Why do we adopt an open communication of our environmental performance?

- Impact studies: How can community participation improve them? Why should socio-economic and cultural aspects be included?

- How do we meet the environmental challenges of operating in the Andean foothills and the Orinoco river delta?
