Abstract: Petrology, Depositional Environments and Geochemistry of the Chehel-Kaman Formation (Upper Paleocene) in the Kopet-Dagh Basin, Northeast Iran

MAHBOUBI, ASADOLLAH, Dept. of Geology, Faculty of Science, Mashhad University, Mashhad, Iran

The Kopet-Dagh Basin is located in northeastern Iran and contains more than 6000 meters of Mesozoic and Cenozoic sediments. The Upper Paleocene carbonates of Chehel-Kaman Formation are well exposed on the southeastern part of this basin in Iran and does not have any exposure to the north in Turkamanestan. The purpose of this study to interpret the petrology, depositional history and paleogeography of the Chehel-Kaman Formation. Since the Kopt-Dagh is a petroliferous basin in Iran and Turkamanestan, and this interval has not previously been studied in detail, this study will further the understanding of the history of the Kopet-Dagh Basin in northeastern Iran and Turkamanestan (to the north) which can be used for further exploration in these areas. For this study at least 8 stratigraphic sections will be measured and studied in field an thin sections, also 150 samples will be analyzed by Mass Spectrometer for C and O isotope and by A. A. for major an trace elements. Some carbonate samples for determination of diagenetic changes will be studied with CL microscope. XRD and SEM will be used to identify the mineralogy and fabrics Carbonate.
