Summary

Crude oils from Australia and Southeast Asia are unusual for the predominant number that are derived from coals and other sediments rich in terrestrial organic matter. Some hydrocarbons in these oils bear the distinctive carbon isotopic signatures of the various vascular plant components, including resins and cuticular wax, which were present in the original source organic matter. This paper reports the natural variability in individual hydrocarbon isotopic signatures of terrestrial oils and how these data can be related to the nature and origins of extant plant biochemicals.
