Abstract: Biological marker and paleozoological characterization of the early marine incursion in the lacustrine sequences of the Campos basin, Brazil

MELLO, M. R. & MARIA HELENA HESSEL - PETROBRAS

Summary

The Campos Basin is located offshore Rio de Janeiro (Southeastern Brazil) and covers an area of about 100,000km2 from the coastline to 3 400m water depth. The basin evolved from a rift to a drift sequence, as a part of the passive margin of the Atlantic Ocean. Several authors, using biological marker, geological and micropaleontological methods in the shales and coquinas of the Lagoa Feia Formation, suggest that the first marine incursions occurred during the Early Barremian through the topographic volcanic barrier of the Sao Paulo Ridge. As a result, intermittent seawater transgressions from the South Atlantic Previous HitinvadedTop the lacustrine coastal system of the Campos Basin.
