Abstract: Seismic Bright Spots Sugguest Large Hydrocarbon Accumulation Trends in the Deep Gulf of Mexico

LIU, QUNLING, RICHARD T. BUFFLER, Institute for Goephysics & Department of Geological Sciences, University of Texas at Austin.

Summary

Seismic stratigraphy assisted with inversion analysis is a powerful tool in searching for potential hydrocarbon accumulation trends in the deep basin of the Gulf of Mexico, where well data is still not available.

Seismic stratigraphic analysis has recognized large ocean floor fan systems along the north and west portions of the deep Gulf of Mexico. In some of the fan system, very nicely developed seismic bright spots are found, sugguesting large scale hydrocarbon accumulation trends in the deep Gulf of Mexico. Examples of bright spots from the western deep Gulf of Mexico are disussed.
