Abstract: Financing an Acquisition—A Geologist Works Through the Maze of Possibilities

GRIES, ROBBIE, Priority Oil & Gas LLC

Summary

In 1992, I decided to acquire an oil and gas company. My background as a petroleum geologist prepared me to assess the assets and technical staff of potential acquisition targets; however, the means of financing such an acquisition were new to me. The identification of an attractive $11 million acquisition candidate accelerated my learning process on the limitations and opportunities presented by the principal financing mechanisms available—bank, mezzanine, private equity, volumetric production payments, or the public market.
