Abstract: Stratigraphic Controls on Petroleum Systems in the Bengal Basin

BLAKE, G.H., UNOCAL, Sugar Land, Texas; A.H.M SHAMSUDDIN, UNOCAL, Sugar Land, Texas

Summary

Based on our regional work, biostratigraphic control and seismic correlation, we have found that previous workers have miscorrelated regional markers, e.g., erosional marker, R11 (or R3 of Leitz, 1995) between the western shelfal area and the Hazipur and Kamta wells. These miscorrelations, on the order of approximately 1000 m directly affect basin modeling in respect to understanding the timing of hydrocarbon generation and expulsion from the potential source rocks of different stratigraphic sequences. In addition, the regional work has helped to delineate the distributionary patterns (facies change) of potential source rocks, seals and reservoir sections within different tectonic zones which ultimately reflect in the quantity, quality and preservation of generated hydrocarbons, and finally to distinguish the petroleum systems in the Bengal Basin.
