Abstract

Majnoon Oilfield lies in the Southeast comer of Iraq to the North of the city of Basra. The structure was delineated by seismic surveys and first drilled in 1976 which consists of a double-plunging symmetrical anticline with its long axis extending from the North-Northwest to the South-Southeast and swerves to the North in the North-South direction. The long axis of the structure extends to about 60 km long by 15 km wide with a closure ranging from 60 meters for the Miocene reservoirs to 400 meters for the Middle and Lower Cretaceous reservoirs. The structure is separated from Nahr Umr field to the South by a narrow saddle averaging about 4 km wide.

Exploration drilling in this structure has confirmed the presence of prolific multiple pay zones (over 10 stacked reservoirs) ranging in age from Miocene to Lower Cretaceous with API gravity for the discovered crude ranging from 24° to 40°. The present estimated total oil reserves in place for Majnoon is over 40 Billion Barrels of oil and 17378 x 109 cu ft of gas. This clearly places Majnoon field as one of the Super Giant fields of Iraq that is waiting to be developed in the new Millennium.
