Abstract: Global Warming: Fact or Fantasy—The Science Behind Global Climate Change

Should we really be concerned about global warming? Aren’t increasing levels of CO₂ actually good for a planet dominated by photosynthetic organisms? What is with today’s crazy weather? The science behind our current concerns regarding climate change will be presented. What we know about greenhouse gases and their role in past and present climate conditions will be described in detail, along with what we don’t know (present knowledge gaps) but need to know regarding the role of greenhouse gases and current climate change/global warming concerns. Specific examples of how selected New England tree species are responding to changes in both physical (ice damage) and chemical climate (air pollution impact) will also be discussed. The role of forest ecosystems as a means of carbon sequestration will be considered, along with the future of forest health in a changing global climate. Questions from the audience will be solicited, and an active exchange of ideas and concerns will be encouraged.
