Abstract: Stratigraphic Interpretation of the Badenian Fm. in the Romanian Part of the Pannonian Basin - The Step from 2D to 3D

VELESCU, MARIUS, ALEXANDRU B. POPESCU, and KLAUS C. FISCHER*

The hydrocarbon exploration in the Romanian part of the Pannonian Basin mainly focuses on the Badenian Fm, which was deposited in a deep-marine environment after a prominent relative rise of sea level. It mainly consists of fan deposits. The clastic sediments were eroded in the adjacent hinterland and were transported into the basin. The coarse-grained clastics form the most important reservoir in the area. The traps are mainly of stratigraphic types; i.e., updip pinchouts of coarse-grained lowstand fan deposits, lowstand wedge barrier sands, reworked, well-sorted sands of the transgressive systems tract and channel fill sediments of - during relative sea level lowstand - incised valleys.

The case study presented deals with an area having been explored and developed previously with 2D seismic only. This is due to the structural complexity and the strong dip insufficient for identification and delineation of leads and for further development of proven hydrocarbons. The improvement in terms of data quality of 3D compared to the previous 2D data is presented.

The stratigraphic interpretation resulted in the identification of two depositional sequences and the delineation of lowstand and transgressive / highstand systems tracts within those sequences. The structural and depositional history of the basin was investigated in detail using the 3D data set. Based on the stratigraphic framework, leads for further exploration were identified and recommendations for further development of known hydrocarbon occurrences could be given.
