Abstract: Jurassic to Paleogene sedimentation in North East Bulgaria and the adjacent Black Sea

HARBURY, NEIL, and MARTIN COHEN*

Oxfordian to Paleogene strata occur in outcrop in northeast Bulgaria and in abundant core material from wells drilled both in the Black Sea and onshore. Sedimentological descriptions, biostratigraphy and seismic studies have allowed the identification of a number of depositional megasequences, within which a variety of lithofacies have been described.

During the Upper Jurassic to Valanginian northeast Bulgaria and the adjacent Black Sea was divided into a platform area in the north dominated by shallow marine carbonates (the Moesian Platform), passing southwards into a deep marine basin. Seismic and sedimentological studies suggest the platform had a ramp morphology.

Hauterivian and Barremian flooding deposited marls over the platform, with turbiditic sandstones in the more basinal areas. By Aptian times basin shoaling is suggested by the deposition of shallow marine sandstones and carbonates. The Albian was a period of erosion and/or nondeposition, with regional tilting to the southwest, probably related to uplift along the shoulders of a western Black Sea rift.

Renewed transgression deposited a thin Upper Cretaceous-Paleocene section across the Moesian Platform. Facies include a variety of carbonates and mixed siliciclastic/carbonates. In late Paleocene times shallow marine coralline algal buildups were common, while basinward thick marls and turbiditic clastic sediments accumulated in the Balkan foredeep.

Eocene flooding is marked by fine-grained glauconitic mixed siliciclastic/carbonates, passing up into higher energy nummulitic limestones and coarse sandstones deposited in an extensive shallow marine shelf.
