Abstract: The Quick Review Phase of the Matzen Field Rehabilitation Project, Vienna Basin, Austria

A Quick Review of the production behavior of the Matzen Field was performed in order to define immediate actions necessary to improve the production of the field before the conclusion of a concurrent detailed re-evaluation study, which is targeting the definition of the remaining economic potential due to geological and operational heterogeneities.

A critical tool utilized for this Quick Review was the visualization of different combinations of production data, which enabled the overview and evaluation of their synergy in this highly complex field (over 400 pools distributed in more than 70 horizons, exploited by more than 1300 wells for 50 years).

This front end approach in combination with traditional techniques, such as material balance calculations and decline-curve analysis versus volumetric calculations, allowed the clear definition of the problem(s) for each pool. Furthermore, it facilitated the direct correlation of the sedimentological and operational heterogeneities to reservoir performance.

The Quick Review resulted in a proposal for 9 infill wells, some 50 well-bore interventions and the definition of a number of critical issues to be investigated by the detailed study.

The Quick Review technique clearly illustrated the significant impact of operational heterogeneities on production performance. The production history demonstrates the need for introducing fast responsive action to improve the reservoir management of the field.
