Interpretation of Complex Structures Using Remotely Sensed Data

Four examples of complex structuring are used to illustrate the point that detailed interpretation of remote sensing data over exposed complex structures can provide a key to determining the structural style or styles of an area and will assist in developing a structural model. The remote sensing interpretation and the model can then be used to assist in interpreting seismic, magnetic and gravity data of the area.

The complex structures illustrated are: 1) an area of small, buoyant salt structures; 2) tectonic salt structures; 3) a low-angle, overthrust sheet; and 4) the junction of major tectonic elements. Each example is illustrated by a remote sensing sub-scene, a segment of a published geologic map, and an interpretation of the remote sensing data.
