With the approach of the 21st century, we must examine various key questions pertinent to the future success of independent petroleum consultants. What tools and techniques will he necessary in order to maintain a competitive edge? What formal education, special training and specific credentials will be needed to operate efficiently? What management and business strategies will become essential to ensure profitability? What emerging technologies will impact our careers? This paper will survey and outline future requirements to ensure success, including:

(1) Computer literacy and methodologies,

(2) Certification/registration credentials,

(3) Environmental awareness needs,

(4) Non-traditional subjects and skills to master,

(5) Management tools and business tactics, and

(6) Continuing education essentials.
