Abstract: Automation of Storage, Retrieval and Drafting of Petroleum Systems Data, With Examples from the Subandean Basins of South America

David G. Smith, Jonathan Green, Kenneth Chew

As part of a global database of petroleum geological information, Petroconsultants has developed a database module for the storage and retrieval of data relevant to petroleum systems analysis. For each petroleum system the information can include the following: system name; level of certainty; geological province; source, reservoir, seal and overburden depositional age; active duration of the system; peak period of generation of oil and of gas; together with a textual description and comments. The petroleum system data is linked in the database to hydrocarbon plays and thus to individual fields and discoveries that have been charged by the system. From this information, it is possible to generate maps of the extent of the system, and standardised petroleum system events c arts showing the stratigraphic location of the main components of the system. The application of this approach to the comparison of petroleum systems at a regional scale will be illustrated with examples from the Subandean basins of South America.
