Abstract: Archive Slides and Negatives on Photo CD's, then Annotate and Enhance

Evelyn B. Newman, Robert K. Mark, John K. Nakata

Digitize your important slide images and store them without deterioration on a Photo CD (PCD) for about a dollar an image. These digitized photographs do not deteriorate like film, making them ideal for copying, without loss of color or image quality, and for permanent archiving. They are stored under the ISO 9660 standard and can be read across Mac, Windows, DOS, and other platforms that have applications that read Kodak's PCD YCC file format. Each 24-bit image is stored under 5 resolutions, ranging in size from approximately .07 to 18 MB (thumbnail to high resolution) which corresponds to 128 × 192 pixels/inch to 2048 × 3072 pixels/inch. The choice of resolution depends on whether you are previewing "thumbnail" views on your computer, using medium res lution for multimedia presentations, or exporting high-resolution images for publication.

In addition, with image-processing software such as Adobe Photoshop, PCD images may be annotated and enhanced (e.g., selective contrast and brightness adjustments, sharpening, masking). Examples will be shown of digital images from PCD's of various rock art sites and the Loma Prieta earthquake.
