Abstract: Integration of Seismic Data in Computer Aided Reservoir Modelling

Oil industry multi-disciplinary asset teams need to generate accurate 3D models for field studies to ensure efficient exploitation of reserves. Computer Aided Reservoir Modelling (CARM), on graphic computer workstations, utilising reservoir management software, can greatly assist teams in their development of these models. The common datatype available to all team members is high resolution 3D seismic surveys, these are routinely interpreted in vertical seismic section, in 3D Cube volume and in mapping of seismic attributes in mapview, to develop a structural model for the field under study.

However, for asset teams to gain further understanding of the reservoir and to "add value "to their interpretation, reservoir modelling studies need to use more refined and integrated modelling techniques. Thus asset teams need to utilise new novel methods of integrating seismic into their reservoir models.

The key to being able to utilise these modern methods is having new interpretation applications, and a single integrated database. Landmark's OpenWorks 3 production geo-science database utilises an industry standard RDBMS, and allows numerous well attributes to be modelled interactively and the results stored in the database. Case studies will be presented illustrating techniques which aided interpretation and discerned new features not visible on conventional seismic displays. Examples include, geological cross section building, which can be given improved accuracy in interwell areas by displaying a "seismic backdrop" which guides the interpreters surface model construction by having seismic reflectors and structural detail displayed.

Seismic amplitude can also be statistically analysed and then integrated with well attributes to discern trends and patterns that correlate one attribute against another. Once seismic attributes have been determined they may be displayed in 3D in Stratamodel and then inter-relationships can be discerned and visualised and communicated to all team members, prior to reservoir simulation.

New software applications for Reservoir Attribute Visualisation and Extrapolation (RAVE), allow cross plotting and visualisation of the statistical relationship between combinations of seismic and well attributes.
