Abstract: GPS for Environmental Mapping

Warren S. Morse, Eric Jespersen

An overview of GPS technology and the use of GPS receivers in measuring and mapping natural resources.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) has become a powerful tool for those interested in studying and managing natural resources. GPS may be used to record one's position within a few meters anywhere on Earth. In combination with a digital mapping system, previously difficult or impossible mapping tasks may be accomplished simply. With receiver capabilities increasing and prices decreasing, GPS is becoming cost effective for a wide variety of applications. Using GPS proficiently involves understanding one's needs, investing in appropriate equipment, and learning to use it efficiently both in the field and in the office.
