North Slope Aptian to Albian High Resolution Biostratigraphy and Seismic Depositional Modeling

Michael B. Mickey, Edward Padilla, Brian Reed

An integrated approach using high resolution biostratigraphy and seismic data was applied to a west - east transect across the North Slope in an effort to correlate Aptian to Albian age topset, foreset and bottomset seismic facies. Foraminifera faunal diversity and abundance were used to establish time correlations within each of the seismically defined topset, foreset and bottomset facies packages in ten (10) wells. Characteristic bathymetric assemblages were identified within each of the seismic facies packages. These seismically tied bathymetric assemblages can be used in future exploration drilling in areas where the seismic records may not be as easily interpreted.

This approach not only produced a depositional model for the Aptian to Albian age strata, but it also resulted in the ability to correlate associated shelf, slope and base of slope sandstones. The resultant model appears to match closely with a seismic model for topset, foreset and bottomset distributions in a similar shelf to basin transect in the Upper Cretaceous of the offshore Seychelles area.
