Integrated Exploration Study in the Putumayo Basin of Colombia

J. L. Gevirtz, W. D. Tomlinson

Two studies were conducted independently on the Santana Block, Putumayo Basin of Colombia. The first mapped and analyzed surf ace structure and stratigraphy using satellite images, radar, and aerial photographs. This study defined several complexly faulted surface structures. The second study analysed samples collected concurrent with a seismic program for aromatic hydrocarbons using fluorimetric methods. Observed geochemical patterns seen at the surface apparently bore little resemblance to subsurface structural configuration obtained from seismic data; geochemical patterns were believed at first to represent surface processes associated with tone Putumayo River. Geochemical data were integrated with image analysis results. Combined data reveal a different, more geologically consistent interpretation. Resulting maps highlight several faulted structural features mapped at the surface whose exploration significance had not previously been recognized. these structures showing high aromatic hydrocarbon leakage, associated with surface faults and fractures, that suggest that they are oil bearing. Integrating data from several disciplines can be relatively easily accomplished using modern computer software and hardware. This study strongly indicates that such integrated maps will yield significantly greater insight into the nature of oil and gas occurrence within an area.
