Abstract: The Tertiary Geology of Bayah Area in Previous HitRelationNext Hit to the Evolution of West Java

D. Sukarna Kusnama, H. Panggabean, S. A. Mangga

During the Paleogene, the geology of Bayah area was characterized by a regressive sequence of sedimentary and volcanic rocks, which were alternatively deposited in a shallow basin. During the Neogene, sediments of an open-marine environment and volcanic rocks were deposited in a transition environment in the southern rim of the basin. Both rock types were derived from the southern region. The boundary Previous HitbetweenNext Hit Paleogene and Neogene is characterized by an erosional surface. Three major tectonic phases can further be recognized in this area. They are noted to take place in the late Paleogene, late middle Miocene, and late Miocene.

The evolution of this area is extremely influenced by the movement of the Indian plate colliding with the Eurasian continental plate. The subduction of the Indian plate underneath the Eurasian plate Previous HitbetweenNext Hit 80 to 53 Ma resulted in the placement of the Bayah area and most parts of West Java in the fore-arc region. Movement changes of the Indian plate from 53 Ma to 36 Ma are indicated by the decrease in the rate of plate movement and reduced volcanic activity. The Indian plate movements Previous HitbetweenTop 36 and 1.8 Ma lead to the placement of the West Java area into the back-arc region, while the Bayah area became situated nearby a magmatic arc terrane.
