Abstract: Environmental Impact Assessment of Petroleum Projects in Southeast Asia

John Phillip Trudinger

This paper provides an Previous HitintroductionTop to the environmental permitting requirements that apply to petroleum exploration and development projects in Southeast Asia. The larger countries of the region, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand, all have well-established environmental procedures which apply to exploration, new oil and gas developments, and expansions of existing projects.

The agencies responsible for environmental permitting in these countries are identified, together with the main features of the relevant legislation and the procedures to be followed by proponents. Indications are provided of the scope and depth of studies required to meet the needs of these agencies. Forthcoming legislative or regulatory changes are identified where these are known to be planned.
