Abstract: Data_Sim: A Relational Database for Analysis of Stratigraphic/Sedimentologic Computer Models

Eugene C. Rankey, W. Lynn Watney

Data_Sim, a relational database on stratigraphic and sedimentologic computer simulations, is being developed to systematically define the structure, utility, and applications of simulation programs. The objectives of the database and related analysis are to provide detailed user-defined descriptions and queries of each model and to facilitate comparison between models. The goals of the project are: (1) to inform developers and interested scientists of the directions of modeling and areas for collaboration and further research; (2) to provide for more efficient communication among modeling groups; (3) to understand the structure and status of current models for those unfamiliar with modeling; (4) to help define the kind of geologic data used and applications to which the models have be n applied; and (5) to establish what geological insight that the models have contributed. A reviewed version of the database will be placed on an Internet server for viewing and comment to facilitate an open discussion on modeling.

We are canvassing developers to acquire information on their modeling programs to include in this database. A prototype database will be demonstrated and interim findings will be shown for feedback. Questionnaires will be available.
