ABSTRACT: Applications of Previous HitMagneticNext Hit and Electromagnetic Surveys to Environmental Investigations of Oil Field Properties

The application of Previous HitmagneticNext Hit, electromagnetic induction (EM), and ground penetrating radar (GPR) methods to environmental investigations of oil field properties will be discussed. These methods have been used successfully for the delineation of abandoned oil wells, tanks, pipes, oil sumps, mud pits, and pits containing miscellaneous buried metallic debris. The applications of geophysical methods to the delineation of various contaminants is currently undergoing investigation and will be discussed with an emphasis to their limitations.

These geophysical methods can be applied to investigations of active oil fields for which records of the locations of the targets are incomplete or in historic oil fields presently being developed for other uses for which records may be scarce, inaccurate, or nonexistent.

Previous HitMagneticNext Hit surveys have been successfully applied to locate abandoned oil wells. Previous HitMagneticTop and EM surveys are generally conducted concurrently and have proven successful to delineate pits containing buried metallic debris. The combination of the two data sets is helpful to differentiate anomalies caused by oil wells from those caused by other cultural features. Tanks and buried pipelines have been located and mapped with EM and GPR methods. The EM and GPR methods have also been successful in delineating oil sumps and mud pits.
