ABSTRACT: The Role of the Environmental Geologist in Improving Upstream Operations Profitability

The environmental geologist can have an important role in improving upstream operations profitability. This leadership potential requires skills in addition to a good foundation in geology and technical creativity. Important skills include: a working knowledge of environmental regulations, an understanding of how and where operations are impacted by the regulations. The ability to visualize the cost-benefits of a compliance strategy in long range operations planning is crucial to effective management.

Three examples illustrate the pivotal role of the geologist in decisions which affected the viability and profitability of upstream operations. (1) An environmentally sound handling procedure was designed for tank bottoms and hydrocarbon contaminated soil as road mix and reduced disposal costs associated with operations. (2) A cogeneration facility was proposed on a property as part of a proposed steam flood but would require the location of a waste water disposal well in an oilfield with no existing proven disposal zones. With detailed mapping, a good understanding of the regional distribution of facies, and effective negotiation with the permitting agency, the exploratory injection well was successfully completed. (3) In considering the acquisition of a producing property, the quant fication of environmental liability with regards to its impact on the long term viability of operations may significantly affect the purchase price or structuring of financing an acquisition. Understanding typical contamination problems on oilfield properties provides a way to quickly quantify liability without formal characterization of all environmental concerns for pre-acquisition negotiations.
