ABSTRACT: Evaluating Exposures to Contaminated Soil

HADLEY, PAUL W., California Department of Toxic Substances Control, Sacramento, CA

Direct contact with soil contaminated by hazardous waste can represent a potential threat to public health. However, a consistent approach for evaluating this type of exposure has been lacking. A recently established methodology establishes health-based exposure criteria known as Applied Action Levels for soil contact (AALsoil contact). Sampling procedures to use these criteria have also been established. Taken together, the AALsoil contact criteria and appropriate sampling provide a technical basis for evaluating soil as a medium of exposure to the public.
